Since September 11, 2001, the United States has quickly shifted toward an even more rigid system of perceiving such political positions as left and right, liberal and conservative. Right and wrong used to be debatable ideas-now they are measurable dualities. As fear, threat of violence, and possibly the threat of fewer privileges, have overwhelmed our collective unconscious, we appear to have become a nation embracing fundamentalist definitions and lines drawn in the sand. In a political environment based so sharply on divisions rather than collaboration, our social environment suffers from the same lack of vision and apathy. In light of this public turn toward certainty in a time when there is none, it is fitting that Imani Harrington and Chyrell D. Bellamy should offer us a perspective that calls for something much more fluid, plural, positive and healing.
