Feminist Pedagogy and Universal Design in a Deaf and
Hearing World: Linking Cultures Through Artifacts and
Understanding
by Deborah Blizzard and Susan Foster
Two students are standing in front of the classroom. The professor is
seated with the remaining students awaiting their presentation on Gender,
Science, and Technology. Beside them stands a person dressed monochromatically,
and in front of the presenters sits another person in similar attire.
The first student begins. He looks up at the PowerPoint and starts to
tell his story. However, although his hands are in constant motion, he
is silent. The woman sitting in front of him "voices" his presentation.
Some of the class watch him and some of the class listen
to her.
